Majority 51% believes use of tobacco and smoking cigarettes damages a persons social status 9% believe it raises the social status and 33% believe it makes no difference.

The results of a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan revealed nearly half of the population of Pakistan 51% believes that use of tobacco and smoking cigarettes damages a persons social status while only 9% believe it raises the social status. 33% believe it makes no difference.

In a survey a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the following question Your respect for a person will increase decrease or remain the same if he or she is smoking? 51% of the people held the opinion that use of tobacco and smoking decreases a persons social status while only 9% were of the view that smoking cigarettes increases the social status of a person. 33% of the respondents held the opinion that use of tobacco makes no difference on a persons social status. 8% respondents said they did not know and or chose not to respond.
