Umar Taj, a Research Consultant at Gallup Pakistan, has been conducting regular Skype workshops for the second batch of Gallup’s summer interns. Umar has a Masters from the London School of Economics and is almost done with his PhD in Behavioural Economics from the University of Warwick. He is teaching the interns how to undertake a survey project from scratch.
Though it may seem like a simple task, carrying out a survey involves many steps and requires a detailed plan. The interns were taught that they must first determine the target audience and sampling methodology, move on to decide the communication methods and also explore marketing and branding mechanisms. Figuring out the reporting methodology is crucial; how to calculate results and generate an index once data is compiled and then publish the data. The interns were given a mock survey project to research and design.
These workshops are very informative and the assignments given are providing a valuable learning experience as they are providing the interns an opportunity to practically apply their knowledge.
